halloween costumeThe carnival session in Germany is also known as the ‘Fifth Season’ and begins on 11th November 2013 at 11:11am and continues for about three months before the Tolle Tage (Crazy Days) which climax on Rosenmontag, which is the 42nd day before Easter! After that, on Thursday, a huge party starts that is called Koln and ends on the following Tuesday with the Nubbelverbrennung (burning the spirit of carnival to atone for the sins committed during the carnival session).

Especially in the final week, when the street carnival has the city firmly in its grip, the German Carnival is in a league of its own. As stated earlier, the carnival begins at 11.11am on Women’s Day, the Thursday before Ash Wednesday.

Offices and businesses close, with hordes of people streaming into the old quarter and Südstadt from the early morning onwards. All day long it’s customary for ‘mad’ women to cut off men’s ties. Carnival Saturday is the day of the first processions through Cologne’s districts. The evening then brings the ghost parade (first introduced in 1991).

But the official highpoint of Cologne carnival is the Rose Monday procession – the excitement overflows and even the most straight-laced of locals get caught up in the spirit.

Millions will be on the streets dressed up in costumes, so be prepared and make sure that you wear the best horror costumes for the German Carnival. There are so many horror costumes that one may wear for this coming Carnival in Germany but we chose the best for you and featured on this page.
