An 87 year old man is having trouble getting carers to come into his home – because it’s said to be haunted by up to twenty ghosts.
John Humphries owns the ancient Ram Inn at Wotton-under-Edge in Gloucestershire. It’s become known as one of the most haunted places in the country.

The ancient inn is mentioned in the Domesday Book and is said to be built on an old pagan burial site.
The inn was built in 1145.
The Bishop’s Room is apparently the most haunted place in the building. John Humphries himself won’t spend a night in there, and always knocks before entering.
John recently broke his leg and needs day to day help, which his daughter Caroline Humphries pays for. But she’s had trouble persuading carers to visit after dark.
Now they’ve come to an agreement: they’ll come, but only in pairs.
“So what’s happened is that we have agreed with the organisation that we can bring two in, and obviously we’ve been funding that, too, because it’s a haunted house. I can’t argue with them.
I’ve seen [carers] on the CCTV running down the stairs, and heard them shouting and screaming on the microphones!!”
– CAROLINE HUMPHRIES, JOHN’S DAUGHTER
Whether you believe in ghosts or not, the hauntings have certainly been good for business. The inn is a magnet for ghost hunters, so much so that the family rents it out to visiting groups of paranormal investigators.
But Caroline – who is too scared to actually live at the Inn – says the frightening atmosphere is very real.
We asked her if she would spend the night:
“I did once, and won’t ever again.
People get a strong presence on their chest and can’t get out of bed. I experience furniture being dragged around understand – a really heavy, loud, laborious dragging noise.”
