A discount store in Japan has recalled thousands of “prank knives” after it discovered they were actually real.

Daiso’s prank knives, called Dokkiri Cutters, have dulled edges and an indentation to make them fit around a finger, tricking people into thinking the knife has sliced through.

But a packaging mix-up saw the discount chain package real utility knives with sharp blades, which the store also sells, in Dokkiri Cutters packaging.

Daiso issued a prompt recall across Japan before any injuries were reported.
